Welcome Fur-Parents! 🐾

Yorkshire Terriers are one small dog with a mighty big personality in their teeny body!  If you’re looking for a small breed of housedog full of spunk, a Yorkie could be the one for you.

Ready for lots of puppy love? It’s not all wagging tails, sloppy kisses & cuddles -- there’s a lot to learn too! Remember, your new paw baby is counting on you to give him or her a fun, healthy & happy life!

-- Here are some ways to get your puppy off on the right paw 🐾

Research

Read as much as you can on Yorkshire Terriers! Know what to expect when it comes to personality, behavior, proper care , toxic foods and potential health concerns (e.g HYPOGLYCEMIA) There’s tons of great references online, yorkie groups & even forums. So please, for the welfare of your new paw baby, I encourage you to make time doing your own research. After-all, taking care of a puppy comes with a great measure of responsibility, and it’s important to prepare yourself, your home and family.

Puppy Proof

Puppies do not know what is safe or what is dangerous, so it is up to you to teach them the difference and prevent them from being exposed to harmful things. While a puppy is still learning, it will test different items, reactions, and ways of doing things to see what happens, and sometimes these tests put the puppy in danger. Toxins such as cleaning agents and insect traps might be consumed by a curious puppy, wires on the ground may get chewed, and openings in furniture, fences, and elsewhere around a home may cause a puppy to get stuck or injured.

Supplies

Your new puppy will need certain items from the very start. Shopping for a new paw baby is incredibly exciting but it can be overwhelming at the same time. So, it’s important to properly prepare for the expenses associated with “Yorkie Parenting”. Be sure to allow extra money in your budget for unexpected costs. High-quality dog food, Nutri-cal, comfortable bedding & indoor kennel/crate are some essential items for your pup’s well-being. Below is a list of items I found online that you may use as a guide:

Feeding + Nutrition

Your puppy's diet can make all the difference in its future health and well-being. While researching puppy food, consider the quality of ingredients, inclusion of proper nutrients, and taste. Make sure to choose a food that is appropriate for growth—not adult dog food or "maintenance" formulas. Puppies need small, frequent feedings for the first few months. Feeding them three or four times per day makes it easier for puppies to digest and help keep energy levels consistent. Your breeder should provide you with ”transition food” . You can follow below instructions, if you decide to switch puppy food:

Transition Instructions

  • Days 1 - 3: 75% old food, 25% new
  • Days 4 - 5: 50% old food, 50% new
  • Days 6 - 7: 25% old food, 75% new
  • Days 8+: 100% new food

Yorkies with sensitive stomachs may need to transition a little more slowly to avoid any digestive upset. If you introduce the new food too quickly and your puppy  experiences some digestive upset, just back up to the previous transition amount where your paw baby wasn’t having any trouble and feed that amount for a few more days before continuing with the transition.

Also, familiarize yourself with foods dangerous and toxic to dogs. Here are some examples:

Other Necessities

• Find a good local vet to keep up with vaccinations & for emergencies

• Start house training immediately

• Find a good dog groomer

•Consider Pet Insurance

• Work on basic training & socialization
